The following proclamation was made by Kaua‘i mayor Bernard P. Carvalho, Jr., at the 2017 Kaua‘i Steel Guitar Festival Ho‘olaule‘a on February 4, 2017:
Whereas, the Hawaiian steel guitar is an instrument indigenous to Hawai'i; and
Whereas, the Hawaiian steel guitar is culturally and musically significant in Hawaiian song and dance; and
Whereas, the Hawaiian steel guitar playing techniques were not commonly shared, thereby causing the instrument's decline; and
Whereas, organizations such as the Hawaii Institute for Music Enrichment and Learning Experiences are actively promoting the Hawaiian steel guitar and its importance in Hawaiian music and culture; and
Whereas, the Hawaiian steel guitar is undergoing a revitalization through music concerts and festivals statewide; and
Whereas, the Second Annual Kaua‘i Steel Guitar Festival on February 3-4, 2017, is designed to extend this revitalization to the residents of Kaua.i through school
visits, workshops, open stage performance opportunities, and a public concert.
Now, therefore I Bernard P. Carvalho, Jr., Mayor of the County of Kaua'i, do
hereby proclaim Friday and Saturday, February 3 and 4, 2017, as Kaua‘i Steel Guitar Appreciation Days.
